Information about Meningitis B and the vaccine

Meningitis B is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). It can develop quickly and, in some cases, lead to life-changing disabilities or become life-threatening.

Why Is Vaccination Important?

Young people can be at increased risk of meningococcal disease, particularly when mixing with large groups of people at school, college, university, or social events. Vaccination helps to:

  • Reduce the risk of meningitis B infection
  • Protect against serious complications and long-term health problems
  • Help safeguard family, friends, and the wider community
  • Provide peace of mind during education and social activities

Other considerations

The MenB vaccine helps protect against Neisseria meningitidis group B, a serious cause of meningitis and bloodstream infections. However, it is important to understand the following limitations:

  • The vaccine does not protect against all types of meningitis (it does not cover groups A, C, W, or Y).

  • Protection is not immediate and develops over time after each dose; completing the full course is essential.

  • As with all vaccines, it may not provide 100% protection, but it can significantly reduce the risk of severe illness.

  • The duration of protection is not lifelong, and booster doses are not routinely recommended for all individuals.

  • The vaccine does not prevent all cases of meningitis or sepsis, so it is important to still be aware of symptoms and seek urgent medical attention if concerned.

  • It may be less effective in individuals with weakened immune systems, including those receiving immunosuppressive treatments.
